What to Expect from a Water Heater Installation Service
A water heater installation by Valentine Plumbing usually takes around 2-3 hours of work. The installation service involves removing the old unit and connecting the new one to your home’s water and power systems.
For gas heaters, we will connect the gas line, while electric heaters require proper wiring to your electrical panel. We will also check local building codes for requirements like temperature/pressure relief valves and proper venting.
What You Should Do to Prepare
Before installation day, be sure to clear a path to your water heater and remove any stored items around it. This is to ensure our plumbers have enough space to perform work. We will drain your old heater, disconnect it, and position the new unit. We’ll also test all connections, adjust the temperature settings, and ensure everything is working properly before leaving.
Last note: you can expect some brief interruption to your home’s hot water supply during the water heater installation process.
How to Maintain a Water Heater
For the best health and longevity of your water heater, we recommend having your plumber inspect your water heater once annually. If you are comfortable doing so, we also recommend you perform a general inspection, such as checking for leaks, aged gaskets, loose connections, or any signs of corrosion.
When it comes to water heater maintenance, you should check and perform the following steps, (or have your plumber handle them):
- Flushing the water heater 1-2 a year
- Check the snode rod
- Test the temperature and pressure valve once yearly
- Check to make sure the ventilation is working
- Review the thermostat setting and lower the settings when you leave for vacation
- Insulate the water heater and hot/cold water pipes

Water Heater FAQs
How long do water heaters last?
On average, your new water heater installation will last you between 8 and 12 years. If your water heater hasn’t been replaced and it’s between 8-12 years old or older, you’re more than likely already seeing signs of old age. Signs of an old water heater include rusting on the tank (or the water), unusual noises, leaking, or failure to heat your water.
How much is a water heater replacement?
If your water heater is getting old, it may be time for a replacement instead of a repair. For an exact cost, please reach out to the plumbing and heating experts at Valentine. We will help you choose the right type of water heater for your home. Find out more here about the cost of a water heater installation or replacement.
What is the most common issue with water heaters?
Typically, the most common issue we see with water heaters is the pilot light. The pilot light sometimes won’t stay lit or the ignitor is experiencing issues which prevent it from lighting. If you’re water heater isn’t heating water properly, check that the pilot light is working. If not, contact a plumber for assistance at (920) 788-5369.
